Procrastination: the art or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention…

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing.  I’m actually procrastinating this very moment by writing this post instead of working out new sections of the sequel to Embrace the Storm.

Do I realize I have given myself a deadline to finish?


Have I learned books cannot write themselves?


Am I concerned I will never finish if I don’t quite procrastinating?



So why do we procrastinate?

I imagine the answer is different for everyone.  Personally, for me, it depends on the day.  Today, for instance, I am exhausted from being a homeschooling mom who teaches three kids during the day and drives them back and forth to dance classes six days a week while trying to figure out how to continue creating make believe worlds I hope will translate into best selling novels some day so I can put said kids through college!

Other days, it can be as simple as wanting to play a video game instead of working.  Or maybe I’m stuck trying to sort out a character’s inner angst and the words just aren’t flowing the way I want them to.



I’ll admit, sometimes I get frustrated with myself for putting things off when I feel I should be working. I have found, however, that giving my brain a break (even just a small one) when I reach the point of procrastination will usually help get me back to where I need to be.  It’s just so easy to get caught up in pushing myself so hard to reach my goal that I forget I need to take care of myself along the way!

What about you?  When do you find yourself the most tempted to give into procrastination?  How does it make you feel?  Care to share any tricks that help you procrastinate less?

  1. Interesting read. Well, for me personally, breaking the task down into smaller time limits helps. Let’s say I have 30 pages to read for this boring assignment on why the world isn’t flat, I would break it down into 5-minute time frames to focus on. I might make a goal like “I’ll read 2 pages in every five minutes” and then try staying true to it. It helps a lot for me, so I thought I’d share

    1. Thanks for sharing your own experience! I definitely like that idea of breaking the time frame down into more manageable (and less intimidating) increments. I may try that as I’m working on finishing this rough draft of my novel. I set a daily word count goal, but it can be daunting at times to sit down and try to write it all in one go. I may try your approach today. Thank you!


  2. That’s great! I know how daunting it can be to write a chapter. I wrote a novel a couple of years back and recently ghostwrote 2 books for a client (I’m a freelancer.) There always comes a day when you’re like, “how about I just take a day off and I’ll write extra tomorrow” and well…it’s all downhill from there😂

    1. I agree. Putting it off only makes it harder later!! Congrats on the novel! I self-published my first novel last summer on Amazon and now I’m working to get the sequel finished.
