Voices of a Battered Soul #7: Failure

“Are you sure you want to do that?”

“Of course,” you reply, puzzled. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“You know you’re going to fail in the end,” they taunt. “What’s the point in trying?”

“Why do you think I’m going to fail? Maybe I just might do something amazing! I could become famous. Or at the very least, perhaps I’ll make a tiny bit of difference in somebody’s world.”

“You have no experience,” the voices snicker. “Everyone else is clearly more talented than you. Their ideas are better, they communicate better. They do EVERYTHING better. Why bother?”

“But it means something to me,” you remind them. “Even if you think I’m going to fall on my face and skin my knees, I still have to try! Maybe I WILL fail. But even if I do fail, I know I’ll feel worse about failing if I never even try…”

Battered Souls have endured a lifetime of abuse: emotional, verbal, physical, sexual, or even all of the above. This leaves behind scars, some of which never truly heal. Although a Battered Soul may find the strength and courage to move forward in life and discover happiness, many times the voices of their scars whisper to them late at night. This is a detailed account of the whispering voices of one such Battered Soul. If you are a Battered Soul, I hope you may find strength in knowing you are not alone in your suffering.
